So you�ve heard about PHP and want to know how to get started with one of the fastest growing web programming languages. Introduction to PHP is a 4 hour class covering the basics of PHP. This hands-on class lets you try out what you learn, and gives you working code you can use on your own projects.

Prerequisites

Basic HTML knowledge recommended, but not required. Materials

Class includes course workbook: Intro to PHP // Taming the Code Jungle by Antharia. Students will also have 90 days of access to their instructor (via email) for questions and answers. Outline

Lesson 1: What is PHP?

* PHP and server-side scripting * PHP and HTML

Lesson 2: Programming Fundamentals

* Statements and comments * Syntax, variables, and output * Data types * Control structures

Lesson 3: Functions

* Using pre-defined functions * Defining your own functions * Variable scope * Autoglobals

Lesson 4: Programming on the Web

* Passing information between pages * Using query strings and request variables

Lesson 5: Working with Forms

* Creating a form * Accessing Form Values * Validation

Lesson 6 : Putting it all together

* Building a Contact Form * Validating the input * Formatting the message * Sending the email

Objectives

Students in this class will take away the following key elements:

1. Students will learn about basic PHP syntax and how to embed PHP in their web pages. 2. Students will learn how to make their web pages interact in simple ways with users, using form fields and query string variables. 3. Students will learn how to send email from PHP, allowing them to customize their email forms, protect their addresses from spammers, and provide a more professional, customizable interface than a typical HTML-based email form.
